The 2013-2014 Innovator of the Future (IOF) competition is now underway! The theme this year is space and the part is related to space and some of the optical components of the Mars Curiosity Rover.
This year’s competition challenges students and young adults to design and machine a mirror from the Rover. You have a couple options for designing this mirror:
- You can machine it as-is, and be creative on the underside (add a logo, a picture, etc.).
- You can try to modify the design with a goal of making the mirror lighter, but still retain its structure and use.
Your part will be judged by a team of experts at Optimax, the company responsible for all of the on-board optics for the Curiosity Rover. Optimax builds optics behind the latest breakthrough technologies in aerospace, defense, and consumer electronics.
If you know a student or young adult, encourage them to enter the 2014 IOF competition. They have a chance to win some amazing prizes, such as a $1,000 check, a free seat of Mastercam Mill Level 1, and a trip for 2 to Florida to visit the Kennedy Space Center with CNC Software, Inc.
